Just An Opinion… Ezra

January 15, 2009 at 11:01 pm (Just An Opinion) (, , , )

I’ll be up front: I LOVE the name Ezra for a boy. If you like Ezra for a girl’s name, I suggest you stop reading right… about… now.

For about a year and a half now, Ezra has been seriously in contention for breaking my top 5 boy’s names (I know… stop the presses!).

He fits all the criteria for me: he is intelligent sounding, has historical connections, is spunky yet classic, with a bonus of not being very common.

I first encountered him in a book series, where he was an incredibly handsome and quirky teacher. This may have influenced my opinion about him a little.

However, while perusing the babynames.com message boards, I encountered a post in which the user was asking for a 4th sister name for a sibset with girls named Zoe, Eden, and … Ezra.

Needless to say, I flipped.

Ezra is NOT an underused cute little girl’s name that has a z. It is a Biblical BOY’S name. Just because it ends in an “a” does not mean it’s perfect for feminine use. Have you ever met a female Joshua?

Also, the feel of Ezra is so masculine to me. EZ-ruh. Just say it aloud. Now repeat e-LIE-zuh. Close name, but a much more feminine feel. Eliza is the name these parents, in my unimportant opinion, should have chosen for their second daughter (she was the middle kid).

So, WDYT? Is Ezra feminine and I missed the memo? Do you know an Ezra of either gender?  How would you complete the sibset of Zoe, Ezra Eliza, Eden, and insertgirlsnamehere ?

Well, Ezra’s male for me, I’d never consider Ezra for a girl!
No, I don’t think you missed the memo, dear, :D I think there are just misguided souls out there.

Finishing that sibset: Zoe, Ivy, Eliza, Eden ( two w/ no Z)/ Zoe, Zaida, Eliza, Eden (two that begin in Z, two in E)/Zoe, Zella, Eliza, Eden (two Z, two E)/ Zoe, Zola, Eliza, Eden(two Z, two E, again). I’d either just not insist on the Z in the other girls names or have another one starting with a Z, so Zoe’s not left out entirely.

I firmly endorse Ezra for a boy. There’s a lady on Babycenter with two boys, Lucas & Ezra. She’s awesome. :)

Lucas and Ezra make an awesome sibset!
My favorite from your above sibsets would have to be Zoe, Ivy, Eliza, and Eden. They all sound similar, yet have different style.
And thanks for agreeing with me that Ezra belongs to the male gender ONLY.

Hy, no problem. I actually have a blinkie I made

(hope that works) I am a firm believer on keeping boys names on the boys (and girls names on the girls) I am horriefied by what I see online quite frequently!

Aw, damn, the link don’t work, you should be able to copy/paste it into a new window, feel free to save the blinkie and use it yourself!

Ezra is definitely a boy’s name. I can’t imagine anyone actually naming their daughter Ezra! You’re right when you compare it to naming your daughter Joshua, lol.

And thanks also for stopping by!
