Names From… Coldplay
If you are of the English-speaking world, chances are you’ve heard that Chris Martin, lead singer of the English band Coldplay and his wife Gwyneth Paltrow named their daughter Apple. Apple Blythe Alison, to be exact. If you think that’s creative, check out the names of the members of Coldplay and their families.
1. Christopher John “Chris” Martin (lead vocalist + various instruments)
- Gwyneth Kate Paltrow (wife)
- Apple Blythe Alison Martin (daughter)
- Moses Bruce Anthony Martin (son)
2. Jonathan Mark “Jonny” Buckland (lead guitarist)
- Chloe Lee-Evans (long-term girlfriend)
- Violet Buckland (daughter)
3. Guy Rupert Berryman (bass guitar)
- Joanna Briston (separated wife)
- Nico (daughter)
4. William “Will” Champion (drummer)
- Marianne Dark (wife)
- Ava (daughter)
- Rex (son)*
- Juno (daughter)*
(* denotes twins)
NOTE: All of the kids were born in 2004 and later, Apple being the eldest. In fact, most of them were born ‘06 and beyond.
What great names! ALL of the guys names rock. William, Jonathan, Guy, and Christopher? Just my style of naming! Their SOs names are lovely (Joanna, Marianne, Gwyneth, and Chloe) as well.
My favorites would have to be Violet and Juno though the rest are pretty snappy too.
Though Apple isn’t my favorite, there is something about the combo Apple Blythe Alison that strikes a good nerve with me. It just seems so wholesome.
WDYT?

I loathe Apple. Can’t they see the “Hey I wanna snack on Apple” sort of jokes she’ll get for years? *sigh* I love her brother’s names, and even little Apple’s middles. Nico on a girl makes me want to weep. So unfeminine! But Ava (while not my thing is still a fine choice), Rex & Juno are a stellar set. I have a major soft spot for Rex myself. What a grand little name! But then, I like William/Will & Marianne as names too!

Funny, I have a draft post in my queue about this exact topic! Which I am now deleting …
I don’t hate Apple. I don’t get it, but I like it better than some other noun names, like Destiny or Trinity or Genesis, which just strike me as too heavy with meaning to work for a personal name. But I agree with Lola – Blythe Allison is a great pair of middle names. I really love Blythe.
And Juno is on my short list. (My husband isn’t wild about it.) And we’ve already settled on Rosemary, nn Romy, if we ever have a second girl. But I love Juno.
If Clio had been a boy, Nico was a possibility, though we would’ve put Nicholas or Nicolo on the birth certificate.
I’m actually surprised Moses hasn’t been heard more often.
They’re certainly a creative bunch!

I am not fond of Apple or Moses, but the name Blythe is lovely. (I know it’s to honor her mom – a reasonable namesake in any case).
Am not a big fan of Chloe – one of the top names in the UK for the last while and it’s about as tired as Emily in terms of usage, but in the states probably not so much. That’s more just my ear.
William is a great name, solid and steady, but nothing to be surprised about.
I like Rex and Juno. They’re fun! And they’re probably the only ones I really like (other than Blythe) from the list.

Most of the names aren’t my thing, specifically, but they beat the crap out of most Hollywood names. I love that they used Alison. So lovely, and so unappreciated anymore, I think.

They did use a lot of Hollywood names… Nico, Ava, and to some extent even Rex are the worst offenders.
I would have preferred they use Nicole and Nico as a nn, but I think it’s not as masculine as it could be. At least her name isn’t Jagger Joseph Blue like a star who shall not be named…

I’m sorry! I just used the Coldplay names because they’re my favorite band… no topic snatching intended.
Rosemary nn Romy is a gorgeous name… would your husband go for Rosemary Juno? That has a cute ring, I think.
And Nicolo from your list is a great way to get to Nico for a guy!
